PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College men's soccer dropped a 3-0 decision on the road to 18th ranked Carnegie Mellon University in a non-conference game Wednesday evening in Pittsburgh.
The loss drops W&J to 2-3 overall while CMU remains perfect with a 5-0 overall record. The Tartans entered the night with non-conference wins over Allegheny (6-0) and Westminster (2-1). CMU has surrendered just one goal this season.
Chris Lee opened the scoring in the eighth minute of action. Lee buried a shot from 18 yards out after a tipped pass from Jake Kavan. The Tartans held onto the one-goal advantage until the latter stages of the first half when they tacked on two more goals to take a commanding 3-0 advantage into halftime.
Ethan Vertal tallied his fifth goal of the season, scoring unassisted in the 33rd minute. Vertal would score just minutes later for his sixth goal of the season. The second Vertal goal of the game was assisted by Diederik Schlingemann.
The Presidents best chance to score came in the 64th minute when they were awarded a penalty kick. However, W&J was turned away when William Burger made the stop for the Tartans to preserve the eventual shutout.

Charles Boldosser (Westminster, Md. / South Carroll) made five saves in 90 minutes of work in net.
The Presidents were out-shot by a 10-7 margin (8-4 on goal). W&J held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.
W&J travels to Penn State Altoona for a non-league tilt on Saturday, Sept. 17. Start time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
