Olsen, Calacan tally goals as W&J downs Marietta, 2-1

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Freshman forward Selah Calacan (Waldorf, Md. / North Point) found the back of the net in the 28th minute for her first collegiate goal to lift the Washington & Jefferson College women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory against Marietta in non-conference play Wednesday evening. 

W&J secured an early 1-0 lead when sophomore Olivia Olsen (Boiling Springs, Pa. / Boiling Springs) booted in an unassisted goal in the sixth minute of the match. W&J set this early score up by creating consistent offensive pressure on the Pioneers defense to gain the initial opportunity. 

Calacan helped W&J add to its lead later in the first half. The first-year scored her first collegiate goal in the 28th minute. 

The Pioneers made things interesting with a goal in the 77th minute. The score by Taylor Sloan cut the Presidents lead in half at 2-1. 

Junior Katie Brown (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) and freshmen Tori DeVere (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) and Jackie Fleissner (Eighty Four, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) were able to anchor the back line as they held off the Pioneers in the final minutes. 

Senior goalkeeper Gabriella Lloyd (Butler, Pa./Butler) picked up the win, playing the first half. in goal Junior goalkeeper Abby Hipkins (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) tallied three saves over the final 45 minutes.

Hoover led the Presidents with a match-high three shots. W&J out-shot Marietta by a 12-8 margin (shots on goal 7-4 in favor of W&J). The Presidents held a 7-2 edge in corner kicks. 

W&J (1-0-3 overall) hosts Hiram for a non-conference game at Alexandre Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 17. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
