Women's Soccer falls to Hiram, 1-0

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- A late goal scored in the second half in the 71st minute was the difference as visiting Hiram beat the Washington & Jefferson College women's soccer team by a 1-0 score Saturday afternoon in non-conference play at Alexandre Stadium.

W&J posted a strong defensive effort for the majority of the game, being led by Kayla Daugherty (Prospect, Pa. / Slippery Rock Area) and Katie Brown (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley).

The visitors goal came from Ashley Sandru with the assist from Mackenzie Morrison. W&J held the advantages in shots (19-11), shots on goal (9-4), and corner kicks (4-3) but could not find the back of the net Saturday afternoon.

W&J's best scoring opportunity came off the foot of Peyton Behling (Annapolis, Md. / Severn School), who sent a screamer towards the net that hit the crossbar in the 40th minute.

Behling led W&J offensively with four shots. Sarah Schneider (Warren, Ohio / Lordstown) and Sydney Hoover (Lancaster, Pa. / Manheim) added three shots apiece for the Presidents, while Brown added two shots.

Junior goalkeeper Abby Hipkins (Canonsburg, Pa./ Canon-McMillan) got the start in net and recorded three saves in 90 minutes.

W&J remains home as they open Presidents' Athletic Conference play on Wednesday, Sept. 21. The Presidents will host Thiel at 8 PM.
