WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson women's soccer team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference play with a 3-0 victory over visiting Thiel College Wednesday evening at Alexandre Stadium.
The Presidents put pressure on the Tomcats from the outset before tallying the game's first goal in the 14th minute of play. W&J was awarded a penalty kick opportunity after freshman forward
Selah Calacan (Waldorf, Md. / North Point) was fouled inside the box. Junior
Kayla Daugherty (Prospect, Pa./Slippery Rock Area) tucked the ball in the upper right hand corner of the net to give the Presidents a 1-0 lead.
A little more than 10 minutes later, the Presidents would extend the lead to 2-0 when junior
Maddie Dittrich (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) beat the goalie one-on-one with a shot past the keeper to the right side of the goal. Daughtery played a hand in the Dittrich tally as well, as she sent a pass that Dittrich ran down before striking the ball into the net.
W&J carried the 2-0 advantage into halftime. The Red and Black registered all 11 shots and all seven corner kicks in the first half.
The Presidents scored the game's final goal in the 79th minute. Freshman forward
Sarah Schneider (Warren, Ohio/Lordstown) corralled a long pass ahead from sophomore
Sydney Hoover (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) and finished past the Tomcats' keeper. The goal was the first of the collegiate career for Schneider.
W&J out-shot Thiel by an 18-4 margin and registered 11 of the 12 shots on goal in the match. Senior goalkeeper
Gabriella Lloyd (Butler, Pa./Butler) started and played the first half before giving way to junior goalkeeper
Abby Hipkins (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan). Hipkins made one save and preserved the shutout with a clean final 45 minutes.
The Presidents move to 2-1-3 on the season while the Tomcats drop to 2-3 overall. The victory was the 22nd consecutive for the Presidents in the head-to-head series with the Tomcats.
W&J travels to Saint Vincent College for another league tilt on Saturday, Sept. 24. Start time is scheduled for 12 p.m.
