MARIETTA, Ohio -- Freshman hitter
Faith Fetsko (South Park, Pa./South Park) put together quite an impressive collegiate debut to power the Washington & Jefferson volleyball team to a five-set victory over Franciscan University of Steubenville in Friday's opener at the BSN River City Classic, which is being hosted by Marietta College.
Fetsko registered 25 kills, 11 digs and three service aces in the season-opening win for the Presidents. The 25 kills is the most in a single match by a Presidents' Athletic Conference player since 2018.
Claire Sauerland (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) and
Lizzie Carmichael (Wyoming, Ohio/Wyoming) joined Fetsko in double figures with 16 and 13 kills, respectively.
Adrianna Sacramento (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) recorded a career-high 48 assists to help the distribution for the offense.
Piper McFarland, another freshman, put together a strong debut defensively as she recorded a team-high 27 digs.
Sophia Sacriponte (Butler, Pa./Butler) tallied 25 digs while
Morgan Kiefer (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) added 14 digs.
W&J opened the match by winning the opening two sets by respective scores of 25-20 and 25-22. Franciscan then edged W&J 25-23 in the third and took the fourth by a 25-18 margin to force a decisive fifth set. W&J gained an early lead and put the match away by scoring five of the final six points. Carmichael posted the final two points with a pair of kills to close up shop.
The Presidents held advantages in digs (111-96), kills (63-49) and assists (60-44).
Lindsey Llewellyn earned her first victory in her coaching debut for the Presidents.
W&J returns to action on Saturday when they return to Marietta for two more matches. The Presidents face Kenyon at 10 a.m. before taking on the host Pioneers at 12 p.m.
