WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Chatham tallied a pair of goals in a four-plus minute span late in the second half to score a 2-1 victory over the Washington & Jefferson women's soccer team in a Presidents' Athletic Conference match Wednesday evening at Alexandre Stadium.
The match was relatively nip and tuck throughout, as the teams played through more than 70 minutes of scoreless soccer. Chatham held a slight 4-3 edge in shots over the first 45 minutes of play.
W&J had a prime opportunity to get on the board in the 51st minute when they created a corner kick opportunity. The ball sailed into the box where
Katie Brown (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) sent a header on net which was stopped by the Chatham keeper. W&J created another chance in the 57th minute when
Makenna Mann (Herndon, Va. / South Lakes) put a shot on goal that was saved.
The Presidents garnered another chance with a free kick in the 59th minute. However, that shot by Brown was sent just high and over the net.
Chatham broke through with a goal in the 74th minute. The Cougars' Emily Martz sent a long strike into the box that was played into the back of the net by Emily Harvey. In the 78th minute, Morgan Anderson scored her ninth goal of the season. The Anderson goal was assisted by Maggie Toomey.
W&J scored in the 84th minute to keep its chances alive.
Olivia Olsen (Boiling Springs, Pa. / Boiling Springs) finished a chance after an assist from
Sarah Schneider (Warren, Ohio / Lordstown). The goal was the team-leading third of the season for Olsen.
Schneider had a potential game-tying opportunity in the 87th minute but the shot was saved by the Chatham keeper.
Schneider led the Presidents with four shots (three shots on goal) while Mann registered three shots.
Abby Hipkins (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) finished with two saves during a scoreless first half.
Gabriella Lloyd (Butler, Pa./Butler) made four saves in the second half.
The loss drops W&J to 2-2-4 overall and 1-1-1 in the PAC. Chatham moves to 5-2-2 overall and 1-0-2 in league play.
W&J hosts Allegheny College for a conference match on Saturday, Oct. 1. The match will start at 1 p.m.
