HIRAM, Ohio -- The Washington & Jefferson College men's soccer team scored twice in the first half en route to a 3-1 victory over Hiram Saturday evening in Ohio.
The win moves the Presidents to 1-1 for the season. The Terriers fall to 0-2 in 2022.
Zach Bowser (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) got W&J on the board when he scored off of a corner kick from
Claude Irankunda (Dayton, Ohio / Spring Valley Academy) in the 27th minute of play. The Presidents wasted little time in adding to their lead as
Ian Gillispie (Foster, W.Va. / Scott) tacked on another W&J goal in the 33rd minute. The goal, which was assisted by
Josiah Winters (Mocksville, N.C. / Calvary Day School), was the first of the collegiate career for Gillispie.
W&J would carry that momentum and a 2-0 lead into halftime. Hiram was able to get on the board with a penalty kick goal by Matt Callan in the 68th minute. The Callan goal certainly made things interesting as W&J's lead was cut to a single score. However, Winters was able to score an insurance goal for W&J to take a 3-1 lead in the 75th minute. Winters booted into the back of the cage with his left foot after a fine setup by
Parker Byas (Columbia, Md. / Mount Saint Joseph).
Charles Boldosser (Westminster, Md. / South Carroll) earned the win in goal after playing all 90 minutes.
W&J travels to Marietta on Wednesday, Sept. 7 for a non-conference match. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
