WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team dropped a 10-1 decision to visiting Shenandoah University Sunday in a non-conference at Cameron Stadium.
The game, which was scheduled to start at 1 p.m., was delayed more than two hours due to a transportation for the Hornets. Neither team was able to find the back of the cage over the initial 15 minutes, as the teams were scoreless after the first quarter. Junior goalkeeper
Anastasia Godat (Baltimore, Md./Concordia Preparatory School) made seven saves during the first stanza.
Shenandoah scored three second quarter goals to build a 3-0 lead at halftime. The Hornets out-shot the Presidents by a 21-1 margin and attempted 17 penalty corners over the first 30 minutes. The Hornets added four more goals in the third and three additional scoring tallies in the fourth.
The lone W&J goal came in the 44th minute when freshman forward
Lily Giering (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) scored off an assist by senior midfielder
Lina Crowley (Potomac, Md./The Bullis School). The goal was the first in the collegiate career for Giering.
Godat finished with 14 saves in the loss for the Presidents (0-2). Mairead Mckibbin led the Hornets (2-0) with four goals, three of which came in the second half.
Shenandoah held advantages in shots (35-6), shots on goal (24-4) and corner opportunities (23-4).
W&J continues its four-game homestand on Thursday, Sept. 8 when Kenyon College visits Cameron Stadium. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
