W&J unable to sustain early lead in road loss to Kenyon

GAMBIER, Ohio – The host Kenyon Owls scored three times in the second half to break a halftime tie and claim a 4-1 win over the visiting Washington & Jefferson Presidents in a North Coast Athletic Conference match Wednesday afternoon.

The loss drops the Presidents to 4-4 in the conference and 5-7 overall. The Owls improve to 4-3 in the NCAC and 7-6 overall in 2023.

After a scoreless first quarter, W&J tallied the game's first goal with 4:32 to play before halftime. Senior forward Hailey Wachowiak (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) scored the strike to give W&J the 1-0 advantage. The score was Wachowiak's NCAC-leading 11th goal of the season. Joscelynn Anglin (Biglerville, Pa./Biglerville) was credited with her second assist of the season on the Wachowiak goal.

The Owls countered with the equalizer just a little more than three minutes later. Maren Lawrence found the back of the cage after W&J had trouble clearing the ball from the circle.

The score helped the Owls and Presidents go into halftime even at 1-1.

Kenyon took care of business in the second half. Lena Stone scored just 2:42 into the third quarter to give the hosts the lead for good. The Owls tacked on a pair of insurance goals in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach for the Presidents. Stone tacked on her second goal of the game to make it 4-1 with less than five minutes remaining.

Kenyon out-shot W&J by a 22-9 margin including a 14-4 disparity in shots on goal. The Owls attempted 12 penalty corners compared to eight for the Presidents.

Wachowiak finished with a team-high four shots which included the goal.

Anastasia Godat (Baltimore, Md./Concordia Preparatory School) recorded 10 saves for the Red and Black.

W&J travels to Ohio Wesleyan for a conference game on Saturday, Oct. 14. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
