Presidents roll past Carlow in 8-0 shutout victory

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Behind a dominant offensive performance, the Washington & Jefferson College women's soccer team rolled to an 8-0 shutout victory Wednesday evening over visiting Carlow University in non-conference play at Alexandre Stadium.

The win improves the Presidents to 8-2-3 overall. The loss drops the Celtics to 0-7-3.

The Presidents scored early and often in the decisive victory. Ana Maria Duenas (Quito, Ecuador / University San Francisco De Quito) found the back of the net off a pass from Makenna Mann (Herndon, Va./South Lakes) in the fifth minute.

Sydney Hoover (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) blasted a shot into the lower left corner of the net off a free kick in the 20th minute of play.

W&J tacked on two more goals before halftime. Mann broke free from the defense and finished past the goalie off a pass from Hoover in the 40th minute. Selah Calacan (Waldorf, Md. / North Point) tallied her third goal of the season. Calacan was set up by Mann with just 44 seconds left in the first half.

The Presidents duplicated their four-goal first half with four more goals in the second half. Kendall Obley (Buena Vista, Pa./McKeesport) scored unassisted in the 55th minute. Hoover found the back of the net for a second time, scoring unassisted in the 60th minute. Dove Corrette-Bennett (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock) scored off a lead pass from Katie Brown (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) in the 71st minute. Skylar Bibbee (Fairfax, Va./Chantilly) collected a pass and finished with a shot from the left off a pass from Linnea Johansson (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop) in the 77th minute.

Senior goalkeeper Abby Hipkins (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) recorded a pair of saves. Hipkins posted her sixth shutout of the season.

The Red and Black outshot the Celtics by a commanding 45-2 margin (24-2 shots on goal). W&J attempted all 10 corner kicks in the match.

W&J returns to action with a road trip to Beaver Falls to face Geneva College on Saturday, Oct. 14. Start time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
