Fetsko, Little come up big as Presidents outlast Wolverines in five sets

GROVE CITY, Pa. – Faith Fetsko (South Park, Pa./South Park) and Sophie Little (Marysville, Ohio/Fairbanks) combined for 37 kills, 26 digs and eight total blocks to power the Washington & Jefferson College volleyball team to victory in a five-set thriller at the College Area in Mercer County.

For the ninth time this season, a fifth set was needed to determine the outcome of a Washington & Jefferson College volleyball match. The Presidents fell right at home in what has become an all too familiar place this season. Just as they did Friday night in a thrilling five-set win over Westminster, W&J did what it needed to do in crunch time to capture the Presidents' Athletic Conference victory.

The victory improves the Presidents to 2-1 in conference play and 9-10 overall. Five of the nine wins for the Presidents this season have came in five sets.

The loss drops the Wolverines to 1-3 in the PAC and 15-8 overall.

W&J claimed the first two sets by scores of 25-23 and 25-19. Grove City provided drama by winning the third set 25-22 and the fourth set 27-25 to force a decisive fifth set. The Red and Black was able to regroup and claim the final set 15-9 for the victory.

A kill by Rian Benz (Strongsville, Ohio / Holy Name) swelled the W&J lead to 20-16 in the first set. Grove City countered back with six of the next eight points to draw even at 22-22. W&J finished with three of the next four points, which included a kill and a service ace by Fetsko to secure the set one victory.

The Presidents overcame a deficit early in the second set and methodically built upon its lead. W&J recorded six of the final seven points in the set. Back-to-back kills by Little finished off the 25-19 victory.

W&J scored the first four points of the third set. However, Grove City countered back and led throughout the third. W&J got within a point when a Little kill cut the deficit to 22-21. However, Grove City tallied three of the next four points to force a fourth set.

The Presidents twice had a chance to close out the match in the fourth set. W&J had match point at 24-23 and 25-24 but could not gain the deciding point. Instead, Grove City recorded the final three points and four of the final five to force the fifth.

The fifth set featured six ties and three lead changes. The host Wolverines held a slight 9-8 edge before the Presidents took control down the stretch. W&J tallied the final seven points of the match. Fetsko recorded back-to-back kills to make it 10-9 W&J and force a timeout. Jaden Blough (Meyersdale, Pa./Meyersdale) and Fetsko added two more successful attacks to swell the W&J lead to four points. A kill by Little eventually capped the victory.

Fetsko finished with a match-high 22 kills while adding 19 digs and three aces. Little littered the stat sheet with 15 kills, six total blocks, seven digs and two service aces. Benz finished with 12 kills and 12 digs. Lizzie Carmichael (Wyoming, Ohio/Wyoming) chipped in eight kills and three total blocks.

Bella Anzevino (Brunswick, Ohio/Buckeye) and Piper McFarland (West Mifflin, Pa./Cornerstone Preparatory Academy) combined to handle the defensive duties in the back line. Anzevino finished with 23 digs while McFarland chipped in 20.

Adrianna Sacramento (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) recorded 28 assists and 14 digs. Brielle Moorhouse (East Liberty, Ohio / Benjamin Logan) added 27 assists and two service aces.

Grace Kim led the Wolverines' efforts with 15 kills and 32 digs.

W&J travels to Waynesburg University for a conference match on Saturday, Oct. 14. Start time is scheduled for 11 a.m.
