WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College volleyball team improved to 5-1 in Presidents' Athletic Conference play with a dramatic five-set victory over visiting Geneva College in Presidents' Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon.
The win was the fourth-straight for the Presidents, who are off to their best start in conference play since 2018. The loss drops the Golden Tornadoes to 2-4 in the conference and 9-10 overall.
W&J fell by a slim 26-24 margin in the opening set. The Presidents responded with a 25-17 win in the second set. The teams split the next two sets with Geneva claiming a 25-20 win in the third and W&J securing a 25-23 victory in the fourth set.
The two teams battled throughout the decisive fifth set. The score was knotted at 5-5 before Geneva gained a bit of separation. The visiting GT's led 10-7 in the race for 15. W&J countered with four-straight points which included a kill by
Faith Fetsko (South Park, Pa./South Park) and an assisted block by
Lizzie Carmichael (Wyoming, Ohio/Wyoming) and
Jaden Blough (Meyersdale, Pa./Meyersdale).
Geneva answered with four-straight points to force match point at 14-11. However, W&J responded with three must have points, which included a block by
Sophie Little (Marysville, Ohio/Fairbanks) and Blough to knot the score at 14 all. The two squads exchanged points from there until the match was tied at 19. W&J picked up the final two points to secure the win. Fetsko and Blough finished off the five-set victory with back-to-back kills.
The Presidents finished with a season-high 68 kills in the victory. W&J outpaced Geneva in blocks (13-9) and digs (84-73).
Fetsko finished with 17 kills and 13 digs. Little recorded a career-high 17 kills on an impressive .556 hitting percentage. Little was also the team-leader with eight total blocks. Blough chipped in nine kills while Carmichael had eight kills and four blocks.
Defensively,
Piper McFarland (West Mifflin, Pa./Cornerstone Preparatory Academy) paced a balance effort in the back row with 15 digs.
Bella Anzevino (Brunswick, Ohio / Buckeye) added 13 digs.
Adrianna Sacramento (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) registered 29 assists and 13 digs while
Brielle Moorhouse (East Liberty, Ohio / Benjamin Logan) tallied 28 assists.
The Presidents honored Carmichael prior to the match. W&J's lone senior has earned All-PAC honors each of the first three seasons in the Red and Black. In Saturday's game, Carmichael surpassed 700 kills for her career.
W&J hosts Saint Vincent for another conference match on Wednesday, Oct. 25. Start time in Salvitti Gymnasium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
