MEADVILLE, Pa. – Freshman
Emily Bloom (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) found the back of the cage just 1:52 into overtime to lift the Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team to a 3-2 win over rival Allegheny Wednesday evening at the Blue Turf in Crawford County.
The win helped the Presidents avenge an overtime loss to the Gators from earlier this season. W&J flipped the script in Wednesday's win, as it was the Red and Black who overcame a two-goal deficit late to force the extra session.
Allegheny dominated play for much of the game. The home team got on the board when Maya Francisco scored with just 25 seconds left in the first quarter. The Gators maintained the one-goal edge into halftime.
Despite out-shooting the Presidents by an 8-1 margin in the third quarter, the Gators could not extend their lead further during the quarter.
With a goal by Maddy Keenan early in the fourth quarter, the Gators appeared poised to extend their winning streak over the Presidents to five-straight games. However, the Presidents had other ideas.
With a little more than six-minutes to play, the Presidents turned the tide of momentum following a yellow card on Allegheny. W&J gained three penalty corner opportunities over the next few minutes.
W&J capitalized on the third chance as
Hailey Wachowiak (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) found the back of the cage off an assist by junior
Ella Phillips (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) with 4:55 to play. The assist was the team-leading seventh of the season for Phillips.
Wachowiak struck again exactly three minutes later when
Camryn Cresci (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. DuPont) connected with Wachowiak for the game-tying score. Wachowiak's NCAC-leading 14th score of the season came with just 1:55 showing on the fourth quarter clock.
Bloom wasted little time in helping W&J pick up the overtime victory. The freshman fired a pair of shots on goal. After the initial save by the Allegheny goalkeeper, Bloom would not be denied as the second shot propelled the Presidents to their first win over Allegheny since 2019.
Wachowiak paced the offensive efforts with a pair of goals on a team-high six shots. Bloom notched the game winner while adding three shots in the contest.
Anastasia Godat (Baltimore, Md./Concordia Preparatory School) made 12 saves in goal to pick up the victory.
Allegheny out-shot W&J by a 19-15 margin (14-10 on goal). W&J held a slight 8-6 edge in penalty corners.
The win moves W&J to 6-9 while Allegheny drops to 4-11 overall.
W&J celebrates Senior Day on Saturday, Oct. 28 when Denison University comes to town for a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) match. Start time is scheduled for 12 p.m. W&J will honor Wachowiak, Godat and
Emily Heck (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) prior to the start of the match.
