Second half goal helps first place Grove City edge W&J, 2-1

GROVE CITY, Pa. – A second half goal by Britta Lagerquist was the difference as the host Grove City Wolverines edged the Washington & Jefferson College women's soccer team by a 2-1 score Wednesday evening in a match in Mercer County.

Lagerquist's score came in the 58th minute of play. She collected a long cross field pass from Natalie Merrick in the box and finished at right post from about 10 yards out.

The two teams were deadlocked at halftime after both teams found the back of the net over the first 45 minutes. Grove City scored first when Emma Herrmann notched her PAC-leading 16th goal of the season. Herrmann scored off a pass from Lagerquist in the ninth minute of play.

W&J answered less than five minutes later when Selah Calacan (Waldford, Md./North Point) collected a long pass from Sydney Hoover (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) and sent a shot over the approaching goalkeeper's head from nearly 30 yards out. The goal was the fourth of the season for Calacan. Hoover's assist is her fifth of the season, which matches the team high.

The Presidents put four shots on goal following Lagerquist's go-ahead goal in the second half. The Red and Black, however, were unable to draw even.

The score reflects an evenly played match. Grove City held a slight 13-11 advantage in shots. Both teams put seven shots on goal Wednesday evening. W&J had a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

Nine different Presidents attempted at least one shot. Hoover was one of two Presidents with two.

Abby Hipkins (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) recorded five saves in 90 minutes in net.

W&J closes the regular season at 10-3-4 overall and 5-2-3 in conference play. Grove City completed the regular season at 12-4-1 overall and 9-0-1 against PAC foes to lock up the top seed.

The Presidents will enter the PAC Tournament as the No. 4 seed and will host fifth-seeded Waynesburg University at Alexandre Stadium at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28.

The Presidents and Yellow Jackets played to a 2-2 draw in their regular season matchup on Oct. 4 in Washington. W&J and Waynesburg last met in the conference tournament in the 2021 quarterfinal round when the Red and Black walked away with a 1-0 win in double overtime via a goal by Katie Hahn.

In the other PAC Tournament quarterfinal Saturday, third-seeded Saint Vincent will host sixth-seeded Franciscan University at 7 p.m. in Latrobe.
