Calacan scores twice as W&J, Waynesburg draw in PAC play

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Selah Calacan (Waldorf, Md./North Point) netted a pair of goals Wednesday evening as the Washington & Jefferson College women's soccer team played to a 2-2 draw with Waynesburg University in a Presidents' Athletic Conference match at Alexandre Stadium.

The draw moves W&J to 2-1-2 in conference play and 6-2-3 overall. Waynesburg is now 3-0-2 in the PAC and 5-3-2 overall.

Both teams recorded early first half scores. W&J got on the board first when Calacan dribbled past the defense and scored her first goal of the season. The unassisted scoring strike came in the ninth minute of action.

The visiting Yellow Jackets responded with the tying score just minutes later when Brooklyn Loveland scored in the 16th minute of play.

The score remained deadlocked as the teams entered halftime. Both teams recorded nine shots during the even first half of play.

W&J turned a corner kick opportunity into the go-ahead goal early in the second half. Ana Maria Duenas (Quito, Ecuador University San Francisco De Quito) lifted the ball into the box where Katie Brown (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) headed it towards the net. Although the ball did not reach the keeper, Calacan was able to slap the ball into the net on a slide. Calacan's second score of the match gave W&J a 2-1 lead in the 51st minute of action.

Waynesburg scored the game-tying goal off a corner kick in the 81st minute. Madey Hill was able to knock the ball into the net off the corner kick from Kate James.

Kalea Umali (Pittsburgh, Pa. Shaler) registered a career-high 14 saves in goal for the Presidents.

The Yellow Jackets finished with 20 shots compared to 18 for the Presidents. Waynesburg put 16 shots on goal while W&J finished with eight on goal. The Yellow Jackets had a slight 8-7 edge in corner kick chances.

W&J welcomes Franciscan University of Steubenville to Alexandre Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 7. The 2008 PAC Women's Soccer Championship Team from W&J will be recognized in conjunction with the contest, which is scheduled for 1 p.m.
