Bibbee's goal, strong defense the difference as W&J shuts out Franciscan, 1-0

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Skylar Bibbee (Fairfax, Va. / Chantilly) found the back of the net in the waning moments of the first half to help lift the Washington & Jefferson College women's soccer team to a 1-0 shutout victory over visiting Franciscan University of Steubenville Saturday afternoon in Presidents' Athletic Conference play at Alexandre Stadium.

Bibbee tallied her fifth goal on the season, which matches the team high for the Presidents. The win improves the Presidents to 7-2-3 overall and 3-1-2 in conference play.

The goal by Bibbee came after Sydney Hoover (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) hit the cross bar just seconds before.

W&J made the lead stand up in the second half as Franciscan could not net the equalizer. The Barons had a few opportunities from close range, but they were unable to convert to draw even.

Abby Hipkins (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) recorded all 90 minutes in goal for the Red & Black. Hipkins would collect seven saves on the afternoon to secure the shutout. The shutout is the fifth of the season for Hipkins, a total that leads all PAC goalkeepers. Hipkins has surrendered just seven goals in nine matches this fall.

The back line of Katie Brown (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley), Makenna Mann (Herndon, Va./South Lakes), Tori DeVere (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and Courtney Actis (Bechtelsville, Pa./Boyertown Area) continued to hold strong as they helped Hipkins post the shutout.

Kayla Daughtery (Prospect, Pa. / Slippery Rock Area), Sydney Hoover (Lancaster, Pa. / Manheim Township), and Mann each registered three shots each to pace the Presidents.

The Red and Black out-shot the Barons by a 17-11 margin while Franciscan held the advantage in corner kicks by a margin of 5-2.

The Red & Black will be back in action next in a non-conference matchup against Carlow University on Wednesday, October 11 at Alexandre Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
