Strong second half helps first place DePauw down W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The visiting DePauw University Tigers tallied four second half goals to break a halftime tie en route to a 5-1 victory over the Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at Cameron Stadium.

After a scoreless first quarter, W&J took a 1-0 lead when Lily Giering (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) scored 2:48 in the second quarter. The Presidents carried that lead through the majority of the second quarter until DePauw tied the score with a late goal just before halftime. Maggie Volpe found the back of the cage off a pass from Tiala Ortega with just a little more than a minute left before halftime.

After a competitive first half, the Tigers took control in the second half. Amy Apfelbaum struck late in the third quarter to take a 2-1 lead into the fourth quarter.

DePauw scored three times over the final six-plus minutes. Apfelbaum recorded a goal before Ashley Appleby tacked on the final two scores for the Tigers.

The Tigers held a 26-5 advantage in shots and a 21-4 disparity in shots on goal. DePauw recorded 15 penalty corner opportunities to just one for W&J.

Hailey Wachowiak (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) finished with a team-high two shots, both of which were on goal. Giering's goal was her fourth of the season.

Emily Heck (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) had two defensive saves. Anastasia Godat (Baltimore, Md. / Concordia Preparatory School) recorded a season-high 13 saves.

W&J returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 8 when they host Earlham for another NCAC matchup. Start time at Cameron Stadium is scheduled for 12 p.m.
