Giering’s first collegiate hat trick powers Presidents past Quakers

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Lily Giering (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) registered her first collegiate hat trick to send the Washington & Jefferson field hockey team to a 5-1 victory over visiting Earlham College Sunday afternoon in a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) game at Cameron Stadium.

Giering, who earned Empire 8 Conference Newcomer of the Year last fall, broke out Sunday to help ignite the Presidents' offensive unit. After a scoreless first quarter of play, Giering scored off an assist from Lindsey Blount (Lockport, N.Y./Starpoint) just 2:18 into the second quarter.

The Presidents tacked on two more second quarter scores to take control of the game. Camryn Cresci (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. DuPont) tipped one in from the right post near the midway point of the frame. Ella Phillips (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) and Hailey Wachowiak (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) assisted the Cresci score with some nifty passing near the net.

A little more than a minute later, Giering gathered possession from the right side and lifted a shot over the goalie and into the top left corner of the cage.

Phillips scored the lone goal of the third quarter. The junior notched her second score of the season off a pass from Giering. Phillips was able to nudge the ball into the cage near the right post.

Giering finished off her hat trick with a score in the 51st minute of action. Blount assisted the Giering score.

Earlham recorded a goal near the midway through the fourth quarter to conclude the scoring.

Giering finished with a career-best seven points in the victory. Giering's hat trick Sunday puts her season total at seven goals.

Phillips finished with a goal and an assist. Phillips currently ranks second in the NCAC with six assists this season. Blount added a pair of assists.

The Presidents out-shot the Quakers by a 14-3 margin. W&J posted a lopsided 15-2 advantage in penalty corners.

W&J improves to 4-3 in NCAC play and 5-6 overall. The Red and Black travels to Kenyon College for a critical NCAC game on Wednesday, Oct. 11. The Presidents currently have a half-game lead over the Owls (3-3 NCAC) in the conference standings.
