BERKELEY, Calif. – Five-consecutive fourth quarter goals fueled the Washington & Jefferson College men's water polo team to a 12-11 victory over Penn State Behrend in the season finale for both teams Sunday at the MPSF Championships in California.
The game was close throughout. W&J built a 4-3 lead after the first quarter behind three goals from
Mitchell Rubio (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny).
Kailer Spicer (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) recorded the lone goal of the second half for the Presidents. The score was deadlocked at 5-5 at halftime.
Rubio helped W&J regain the lead with the first goal of the third quarter. PSB responded to eventually pull in front with an 8-6 lead. Behrend led 9-7 early in the fourth before W&J made its run. A goal apiece from
Lazar Marsenic (Park Ridge, Ill. / Maine South) and
AJ Alderman (Camp Hill, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) evened the score at 8-8.
Rubio,
Chris Edwards (Bexley, Ohio / St. Charles Prep) and Marsenic tacked on consecutive goals to continue the run. Marsenic's goal made the score 12-9 with just 2:34 left. Behrend scored twice in the final 1:05 of regulation but the Presidents held on for the narrow victory.
Rubio finished with a game-high five goals in his final game with the Red and Black. Marsenic added two goals and two assists.
Aidan Johnson (Nassau, Bahamas / Windsor) and Spicer finished with two goals apice.
Zishuo Ma (Los Alamitos, Calif. / Los Alamitos) made nine saves to pick up the win in goal.
