ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Washington & Jefferson College men's water polo team split a pair of matches Saturday in the weekend opener.
The Presidents dropped the opener by a 14-5 score to the host Vikkings before bouncing back for a 14-8 win over Connecticut College.
Augustana 14, W&J 5
A big second quarter was the difference in the opener. The Vikings scored seven of the eight goals in the second quarter to break free from a 3-3 tie.
Augustana then added a 4-1 differential in the second half to pull away in the victory.
Aidan Johnson and
Mitchell Rubio both netted two goals in the loss.
Chris Edwards had the other score for the Presidents.
Zishuo Ma finished with seven saves in net.
W&J 14, Connecticut College 8
Ma led the Presidents with an outstanding individual effort in the nightcap. The senior registered 21 saves to help stonewall the Camels.
Rubio and
Aidan Miller combined to account for nine goals. Rubio finished with five goals and an assist. Miller tacked on four goals and an assist.
Edwards and Johnson added two scores apiece for the Presidents.
W&J led 3-1 after the first before taking a 7-4 lead into halftime. W&J then gained even further separation with four of the five goals in the third quarter. Both teams scored three goals in the fourth.
