SANDUSKY, Ohio – The Washington & Jefferson College wrestling team wrapped up its 2023 fall semester Saturday when they competed at the Kalahari Duals, which were hosted at the Kalahari Resorts and Conventions in Ohio. 
 
Alvernia 48, W&J 5
The Presidents dropped a 48-5 decision to Alvernia to start the day. The lone with for the Red and Black in the opener was by Trevor Manley (Altoona, Pa./Altoona Area), who was making his season debut. Manley, a two-sport athlete, picked up a win by fall in 3:48 over Brian Czaus at 285 pounds. 
 
Olivet 43, W&J 9
W&J fell by a 43-9 margin against Olivet. Both wins were registered by freshmen against the Comets. Taylor Smith (Mifflintown, Pa./Juniata) and Christian McChesney (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg-Salem) picked up the victories. Smith defeated Tyler Herrema by fall in 4:04 at 149 pounds. McChesney won by a 7-2 decision over Lloyd Ruesink at 197 pounds.
 
Mount St. Joseph 27, W&J 27 (MSJ wins by criteria (4-3 on falls)
The Red and Black wrestled to a score of 27-27 versus Mount St. Joseph. However, due to criteria W&J lost via the tiebreaker, as the Lions had a 4-3 advantage in wins by fall. 
 
Michael Cruz won by forfeit at 133 pounds. Smith added another victory to his strong debut season, as he won by fall (4:24) over Nicholas Devol. After dropping the matches at 157, 165 and 174, the Presidents closed the match strong. Jaden Fields (Worthington, Ohio / Thomas Worthington) made quick work of Noah Johnson at 184 pounds, winning by fall in 1:22. 
 
McChesney and Manley picked up victories at 197 and 285, respectively. McChesney won by a 4-2 decision over Kaleb Gelter. Manley earned his second victory by fall on the day, as he topped Rowan Tolbert in 2:01. 
 
Alma 34, W&J 20 
 
The Presidents closed out its day with a 34-20 setback to the Alma. Maxwell Jackman (West Chester, Pa. / B. Reed Henderson) picked up the first W&J victory against the Fightin Scots. Jackson won by fall in just 58 seconds over Gabe Sultzbach. 
 
Smith improved to 3-1 on the day with a 22-4 tech. fall victory over Cael Dempsey at 149 pounds. 
 
Fields added another win at 184 pounds. The freshman won by fall in 2:04 over Blaise Armstead II. McChesney recorded the final victory of the day for the Presidents, as he secured a 13-7 decision over Doug Morris.
