Women's Lacrosse battles but falls in season opener to Marymount


WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The visiting Marymount University Saints pulled away in the fourth quarter to down the Washington & Jefferson women's lacrosse team by a 14-10 margin Saturday in non-conference play at Alexandre Stadium. The game was the 2023 season opener for the Presidents. 

Sofia Jenkins (Hughesville, Md./The Calverton School) paced the Presidents offensively in the loss with four points (three goals, one assist). Amanda Effland (Frederick, Md./Frederick) tallied two goals while five others scored one goal apiece for the Presidents.

That group included four freshmen, Anna Kloehn (Canton, Ohio/Jackson), Caleigh Bogats (Oakdale, Pa./Chartiers Valley), Brynne Stewart (Painesville, Ohio/Andrews Osborne Academy) and Mya Bolinda (PIttsburgh, Pa./North Hills), who all scored their first collegiate goals. 

Sarah Labovitz (Great Falls, Va./The Bullis School) recorded game highs in ground balls (10) and caused turnovers (5) and added a team-high six draw controls. 

Kaitlyn Brown (Charlotte Hall, Md./La Plata) tallied seven saves. six ground balls and two caused turnovers in net. 

W&J never led as Marymount earned the wire-to-wire victory. The Presidents trailed 4-3 after the first quarter before Marymount built a 8-5 lead at halftime. The Presidents scored two of the three third quarter goals to trim the deficit to 9-7. Stewart's goal off an assist from Jenkins at the 3:58 mark made it a two-goal game. W&J had multiple opportunities to close the deficit to a single goal but could not do so. 

Marymount scored five of the first six goals of the fourth quarter. The spurt stretched the advantage to 14-8 with 3:13 remaining. Bogats and Labovitz recorded goals in the final minute to close out the scoring. 

The Saints held a 31-25 advantage in shots (21-16 shots on goal) and 17-11 in draw controls. W&J led 29-17 in ground balls. 

W&J hosts Marietta in a non-conference game Wednesday, March 1 at 6 p.m.
