Poised Presidents Power Past Pioneers

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College women's lacrosse team tallied seven of the eight second half goals to take control in a 17-7 victory over visiting Marietta College in a non-conference victory Wednesday evening at Alexandre Stadium.

Four Presidents recorded hat tricks in the balanced offensive attack. Leading the way was freshman midfielder Caleigh Bogats (Oakdale, Pa./Chartiers Valley) with a game-high four goals. A trio of Presidents, Amanda Effland (Frederick, Md./Frederick), Aisa Uhler (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) and Sarah Labovitz (Great Falls, Va./The Bullis School), finished with three goals. Effland added two assists to register a team-best five points.

Emily Heck (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) tallied a pair of goals while Haley Lawyer (Glenside, Pa./Archbishop Wood) and Lina Crowley (Potomac, Md./The Bullis School) added a goal apiece. Sofia Jenkins (Hughesville, Md./The Calverton School) recorded a team-best three assists. Labovitz had a game-high six draw controls in a winning effort.

Ella Phillips (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) finished with a game-high five ground balls and caused two turnovers. Crowley added four ground balls to her stat sheet while Gabby Galla (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) had two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Kaitlyn Brown (Charlotte Hall, Md./La Plata) recorded nine saves in 60 minutes for the victory.

W&J opened the game with back-to-back scores from Effland and Bogats to open the game. Marietta responded with three-straight goals to take its first lead of the game. Uhler scored off a pass from Jenkins with five seconds left in the first quarter to even the score at 3-3 after 15 minutes.

The Pioneers opened the second quarter with a pair of goals in the opening minutes to take a 5-3 lead. However, W&J took control from that point. Back-to-back goals from Labovitz and Uhler evened the score at the 11:11 mark. After a Marietta goal, W&J rattled off five-straight goals to head to halftime leading 10-6. Five different Presidents accounted for goals during the spurt. A tally by Bogats gave W&J the lead for good at the 7:20 mark.

W&J used strong defense and opportunistic offense to dominate the third quarter. The Red and Black scored all five goals in the frame. Bogats recorded a pair of goals during the quarter. The Presidents finished off the victory with two of the three fourth quarter goals. Effland tallied the final two goals for the Presidents.

The Presidents held advantages in shots (36-19), shots on goal (32-16), ground balls (23-15) and draw controls (17-10).
