GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Washington & Jefferson College women's lacrosse team dropped a 22-11 decision on the road to host Kenyon College Saturday afternoon in a non-conference match.
The matchup pitted a pair of NCAA Tournament qualifiers from 2022. The score was even at 4-4 after a back and forth first quarter. However, the host Owls tallied eight of the 10 second quarter goals to put distance between themselves and the Presidents. Kenyon outscored W&J by a 10-5 margin over the final 30 minutes.
The loss drops W&J to 1-2 overall in 2023. Kenyon, the 2022 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Champions, improve to 4-0 overall. The Owls have scored at least 20 goals in three of their four matches and have won each of the four games by double digits.
Sarah Labovitz (Great Falls, Va./The Bullis School) finished with team highs in goals (4), draw controls (5) and ground balls (4) in the loss. Labovitz also added an assist to her stat sheet. Labovitz currently has 95 career goals.
Amanda Effland (Frederick, Md./Frederick) tallied her second-straight hat trick. Effland finished with three goals and now has scored 97 career goals.
Caleigh Bogats (Oakdale, Pa./Chartiers Valley) continues to impress, as the freshman finished with two goals, a team-high two assists and added two draw controls.
Anna Kloehn (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) and
Emily Heck (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) each scored once for the Presidents.
Sam Casile (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) finished with three ground balls defensively.
Kaitlyn Brown (Charlotte Hall, Md./La Plata) recorded a season-high 15 saves. That total is just one shy of a career high for Brown.
Kenyon held decisive advantages in shots (45-20), shots on goal (37-15) and draw controls (25-11).
W&J returns to action on Saturday, March 11 when they host Juniata College for its "One Love Game" at Alexandre Stadium. The non-conference match will commence at 3 p.m.
