WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College women's lacrosse team dropped a 14-8 decision at home to visiting Juniata College Saturday afternoon in a non-conference match at Alexandre Stadium.
The undefeated Eagles entered the bout against the Presidents with some momentum and used a strong second quarter to gain control of the match.
After Juniata opened the scoring with an early goal, W&J was able to respond quickly though with a goal by
Aisa Uhler (East Lansing, Mich. / East Lansing) off an assist from the
Sofia Jenkins (Hughesville, Md. / The Calverton School). The Eagles used a goal by Grace Gibbs at the 1:40 mark of the first quarter to take a 2-1 lead after 15 minutes of play.
Caleigh Bogats (Oakdale, Pa./Chartiers Valley) evened the score early in the second quarter when the freshman tallied an unassisted goal. Briefly after the Presidents goal, the Eagles found their rhythm and recorded four unanswered goals to take a 6-2 lead into halftime.
At the start of the third quarter, the Eagles would tack on four more goals to swell their lead to 10-2. W&J received a goal each from Uhler and
Amanda Effland (Frederick, Md./Frederick) in the third quarter.
Haley Lawyer (Glenside, Pa. / Archbishop Wood) assisted the Effland goal.
The Presidents recorded four-straight goals in the fourth quarter, as Jenkins,
Emily Heck (Reading, Pa. / Berks Catholic), Effland, and Bogats all found the back of the net. The Bogats goal, which was assisted by Effland, made it 12-8 with 3:47 remaining. Juniata tallied the final two goals to finish off the victory.
Effland, Uhler, and Bogats all finished with two goals apiece. Effland led the team with three points. With two goals Saturday, Effland has now scored 99 goals in her career.
Sarah Labovitz (Great Falls, Va. / The Bullis School) led the Presidents in ground balls (7) seven.
Mya Bolinda (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Hills) and Labovitz shared the team-high in caused turnovers (3).
Kaitlyn Brown (Charlotte Hall, Md./La Plata) recorded 13 saves in 60 minutes of work.
Juniata held advantages in shots (33-24), shots on goal (27-20) and free position goals (4-0).
W&J returns to action on Saturday, March 18 when they travel to Hood College for another non-conference matchup in Frederick, Md. The matchup has a scheduled startup at 1 p.m.
