W&J downed by No. 7 ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point

DAVENPORT, Fla. -- The Washington & Jefferson baseball team fell to the No. 7 ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point Pointers by a 9-1 score Tuesday morning in non-conference play at the RussMatt Central Invitational in Davenport, Fla. at the Northeast Regional Park complex.

The top nationally ranked Pointers got on the Presidents early in this matchup as they mounted six runs over the course of the first two innings. Anthony Tomczak slugged a two-run home run with one out in the bottom of the first inning. The Pointers tacked on four more runs in the second inning, using four runs on four hits to stretch the lead to 6-0.

W&J was held scoreless until the top of the sixth inning when Jacob LaDuca (Clarence, N.Y./Canisius) and Evan Sante (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) both reached base via one-out singles. Nolan Lutz (McDonald, Pa. / South Fayette) reached on a fielders choice that drove in LaDuca. The Pointers tacked on a run in the bottom of the frame before adding two more in the seventh.

Evan Sante (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Plum), Joe Lehner (Painesville, Ohio / Lake Catholic) and LaDuca led the team with two hits apiece on the day.

Seven Presidents saw time on the mound over the nine innings. Jackson Denney (Atlanta, Ga. / Mount Vernon Presbyterian) got the start and suffered the loss.

Shane Fox (Valencia, Pa. / Mars Area), Chase Perry (Ponte Vedra, Fla. / Nease), and Brandon Bastian (Barto, Pa. / The Hill School) highlighted the Presidents' pitching as they all pitched scoreless innings of relief.

After a day off on Wednesday, the Presidents return to the Northeast Regional Park Complex on Thursday, March 23, to face another ranked opponent in ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins University. The single nine-inning game is scheduled for 10 a.m.
