GREENSBURG, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College men's tennis team earned its first victory of the spring schedule Saturday against the Pitt-Greensburg Bobcats. The Presidents rolled to a dominant 8-1 victory.
W&J was victorious at second and third doubles while dropping their only match of the day at first doubles.
Jackson Akers (Logan, W. Va. / Logan) and
Connor Simms (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon McMillan) won 8-4 against the Bobcats Cole McGurk and Kyle Glessner at No. 2.
The Presidents other win at doubles came via the combination of junior
Nolan Rehrig (Jim Thorpe, Pa. / Jim Thorpe Area) and two-sport athlete
Jaren Thimons (Valencia, Pa. / North Catholic). In their first appearance together this spring they rolled to an 8-1 win at third doubles.
W&J swept the singles category on Saturday registering wins for Akers,
Alex Duing (Pittsburgh, Pa. / South Park),
Abhinav Yarramaneni (Mountain View, Calif. / Los Altos),
Nate Clarke (New Kensington, Pa. / Valley), Rehrig, and Simms.
The most competitive matchup for the Presidents was at first singles, as
Jackson Akers beat out Deven Summers in a close matchup. Akers was dominant in the first set but struggled to close out the match in the second set in the same manner. Ultimately, Akers took a 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) win at first singles for the Presidents as they took care of business this afternoon.
