Fast start helps Women's Lacrosse shine in Senior Day win over Franciscan

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College women's lacrosse team ripped off seven-straight goals to open up an early lead and never look back in a 15-7 win over visiting Franciscan University in Presidents' Athletic Conference action Saturday at Alexandre Stadium.

The win is the eighth-straight for W&J, who is 9-3 overall and 5-0 in conference play. The loss is the first for Franciscan (4-1 PAC, 5-4 overall) in PAC action.

W&J honored its five playing seniors - Amanda Effland (Frederick, Md./Frederick), Sam Casile (New Kensington, Pa./Plum), Lina Crowley (Potomac, Md./The Bullis School), Gabby Galla (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) and Sarah Labovitz (Great Falls, Va./The Bullis School) - prior to the start of Saturday's contest. The most accomplished class in W&J women's lacrosse history wasted little time in taking control of things versus the Barons.

Six different Presidents accounted for the seven first quarter goals. Effland scored twice in the opening frame as W&J lead 7-1 after the opening 15 minutes. Effland tallied both W&J goals in the second quarter as they carried a 9-4 lead into halftime.

Anna Kloehn (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) scored twice in the third as the Presidents swelled their lead to 11-4 as they held the Barons scoreless in the quarter. Four different Presidents scored in the fourth quarter as W&J eased its way to the eight-goal victory.

Effland finished with six points (five goals, one assist) while Kloehn had four goals. Defensively, Ella Phillips (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) tallied a career-high nine ground balls and added six caused turnovers. Labovitz added six ground balls, four caused turnovers and three draw controls. Casile reached 100 career ground balls in the victory.

Kaitlyn Brown (Charlotte Hall, Md./La Plata) made seven saves in the victory. Brown has compiled a 9-3 record this season.

W&J held stat advantages in shots (50-21), ground balls (41-20) and draw controls (18-8). The Presidents were 19-of-20 on clears and held a decisive advantage in turnovers (29-10).

The Presidents continue their four-match homestand Wednesday, April 19 when they welcome Westminster to Alexandre Stadium. The match is scheduled for 6 p.m. start.
