WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College women's lacrosse team recorded its ninth-straight victory with a decisive 17-5 victory against the visiting Westminster College Titans in Presidents' Athletic Conference action Wednesday evening at Alexandre Stadium.
W&J improves to 10-3 overall and 6-0 in conference play. The loss places Westminster at 1-5 in the PAC and 3-10 overall.
The Presidents used an early scoring barrage to race out to a double-digit lead after the first quarter of play.
Six Presidents scored in the first quarter of play, as they were headed by
Amanda Effland (Frederick, Md. / Frederick), who found the back of the net on three separate occasions in the opening frame.
Sarah Labovitz (Great Falls, Va. / The Bullis School),
Emily Heck (Reading, Pa. / Berks Catholic), and
Aisa Uhler (East Lansing, Mich. / East Lansing) each tacked on two goals a piece.
Lina Crowley (Potomac, Md. / The Bullis School) and
Caleigh Bogats (Oakdale, Pa. / Chartiers Valley) also found the back of the net in the opening quarter.
Heck and
Mya Bolinda (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Hills) added a scoring tally in the second quarter to help W&J take a 13-2 lead into halftime.
W&J scored twice in the third quarter with Effland playing a role in both scores. The senior scored at the 13:33 mark of the third and later assisted a goal by
Anna Kloehn (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) at the 4:51 mark.
The Presidents wrapped up the night with two additional goals in the fourth quarter, as Bogats and Labovitz found the back of the net, to make the final margin 17-5 in favor of the Red and Black.
Kaitlyn Brown (Charlotte Hall, Md./La Plata) made six saves in the victory. Brown has compiled a 10-3 record this season.
Gianna Baker (Carlisle, Pa. / Trinity) got some time in goal as well tonight and made two saves in 25 minutes of work.
Effland led the Presidents in scoring with four goals and four assists for a total of eight points. Heck followed with a five-point night (3 goals, 2 assists) and Labovitz finished with three goals for a hat trick as well. Labovitz added six ground balls, three caused turnovers and three draw controls to fill her stat sheet.
Sofia Jenkins (Hughesville, Md. / The Calverton School) dished out three additional assists. Defensively,
Ella Phillips (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) finished with five ground balls and two caused turnovers.
W&J held stat advantages in shots (31-16), ground balls (30-14) and draw controls (14-11). The Presidents were 11-of-13 on clears and held an advantage in turnovers (24-17).
The Presidents continue their four-match homestand when Waynesburg University comes to town on Friday, April 21. The match is scheduled for 6 p.m. start. at Alexandre Stadium.
