WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College men's tennis team dropped a 7-2 decision to a top Presidents' Athletic Conference opponent with Franciscan Saturday in Washington, Pa.
The loss drops the Presidents to 3-8 overall and 2-5 in conference play. Franciscan moves to 5-9 overall and 4-1 in PAC matches.
First-year member of the tennis team and dual-sport athlete
Jaren Thimons (Valencia, Pa. / North Catholic) had an impressive day as he was the only President to complete the day with a 2-0 record between singles and doubles matches. Thimons took a close victory over the Barons James Scanlon at the sixth singles slot while earning another close outing with fellow President
Nate Clarke (New Kensington, Pa. / Valley) as they took an 8-6 win over the Barons third singles pairing.
The Presidents also saw completive performances from freshman
Alex Duing (Pittsburgh, Pa. / South Park) and
Abhinav Yarramaneni (Mountain View, Calif. / Los Altos) at second and third singles. Duing lost his first set but flipped the match completely as he would rally for a 6-2 set two win. Ultimately Duing would fall to the Barons Aidan Palladino 6-2 in the final set.
Yarramaneni took his matchup with the Barons into extra sets as they would trade set victories (6-3, 3-6). Yarramaneni would also ultimately fall in an extra set by a score of 10-6 in a tightly contested battle with the Barons Samuel Sabol.
W&J returns to competition on Tuesday, April 18 in Washington for a matchup with Geneva College. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m.
