Presidential Mettle: W&J finishes off Allegheny to capture third-straight PAC title

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- A balanced offensive effort and a 12-save effort by junior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Brown (Charlotte Hall, Md./La Plata) powered the Washington & Jefferson College women's lacrosse team to a 14-10 victory over second-seeded Allegheny College in the 2023 Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship game Saturday afternoon at a sun splashed Alexandre Stadium.

The victory extends W&J's school record winning streak to 14 games. W&J holds a 15-3 overall record. The 15 wins are also a single-season school record. Allegheny closes the season at 14-5 overall.

Three Presidents registered hat tricks in the victory. Sarah Labovitz (Great Falls, Va./The Bullis School) recorded a team-high five points (four goals, one assist) while a pair of freshmen, Mya Bolinda (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) and Caleigh Bogats (Oakdale, Pa./Chartiers Valley), both netted three goals in the victory.

Brown, who was later named PAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player, made six of her 12 saves in the fourth quarter.

The teams exchanged scores early in the first quarter before W&J scored three times in a span of 2:19 midway through the quarter and the Presidents would take a 4-2 lead into the second. Allegheny was able to get within a goal in the second quarter, but Labovitz scored twice a little over a minute apart to push W&J's lead back out to 8-5 with two minutes left in the half.

The Gators made it an 8-6 score when Lauren Petrarca scored with 1:39 left and it was a two-goal spread at halftime. That late goal gave Allegheny some momentum for the third quarter, as goals by Senna Pearlman and Grace Baginski in the first five minutes of the third period tied the game at 8-8.

The tie was short-lived however, as just 14 seconds after Baginski's score, W&J went back in front on a score by freshman Anna Kloehn (Canton, Ohio/Jackson). That score started a 5-0 W&J run, which featured a pair of goals by Bogats, and when Bolinda scored at 13:22 of the fourth quarter, the Presidents had their biggest lead at 13-8.

The Gators managed to get back two of those goals on scores by Emily Herrold and Perelman to make it 13-10 with 9:38 left, but that was the final Gator goal of the game. Brown made four of her six fourth-quarter saves in the final eight minutes and Labovitz added an insurance goal to clinch the win and W&J's third straight PAC crown.

Brown, who made 22 saves in W&J's two tournament wins, was selected as the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player.  Labovitz also made All-Tournament Team after she finished the title game with team-highs of four goals and five ground balls.

Notching hat tricks for the Presidents in the victory were Bogats and Bolinda, who also made All-Tournament team, as did junior Sofia Jenkins (Hughesville, Md./The Calverton School), who had two assists and six draw controls Saturday. Others to post multiple points for W&J in the win were junior Aisa Uhler (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) with two goals and one assist and junior Emily Heck (Berks, Pa./Reading Catholic) with one goal and one assist and sophomore Ella Phillips (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) had a strong defensive game with four caused turnovers and four ground balls.

Perelman led the Gators with six points (3g/3a) while goalkeeper Sarah Thorman made seven stops in net.

By virtue of claiming the conference title, W&J receives the conference's automatic-qualifying bid to the Division III Championship. The 46-team field for this year's Division III Championship is scheduled to be announced Monday, May 8. The announcement is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on NCAA.com. First and second round games are scheduled for Saturday-Sunday, May 13-14.
