CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- A solid all-around effort propelled the Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team to a 5-0 shutout victory over Earlham College in the consolation game of the Wilson College Tournament Sunday morning in Chambersburg.
The win improves the Presidents to 1-2 while the Quakers drop to 1-3 in 2023.
W&J gained the early lead when sophomore
Lindsey Blount (Lockport, N.Y. / Starpoint) scored in the opening minutes for a second-consecutive day. Blount smacked a shot in from the top of the circle to give W&J a 1-0 lead just 1:46 into the opening quarter of play.
In the second quarter, freshman
Emily Bloom (Irwin, Pa. / Penn-Trafford) found the back of the cage for the first time in her collegiate career. Bloom's unassisted goal strengthened the W&J lead to 2-0 in the 20th minute. The Presidents remained in control and stout defensively, as they took the 2-0 advantage into halftime.
Neither team was able to garner much offensively during a scoreless third quarter. W&J broke out in the fourth quarter to put the game away. The Presidents scored three times over the final 15 minutes to finish off the dominant 5-0 victory.
Hailey Wachowiak (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) tallied an unassisted goal in the 51st minute. A few minutes later, Wachowiak set up
Lily Giering's (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) scoring strike. The offensive barrage continued a little more than a minute later when the duo connected again. This time it was Giering finding Wachowiak with a crossing pass into the front of the net. Wachowiak was able to knock the shot to swell the Red and Black advantage to 5-0 with just a little more than five minutes remaining.
The defensive group led by junior
Ella Phillips (Arnold, Pa./Broadneck), sophomore
Bailey Miller (Lancaster, Pa. / Manheim Township) and senior
Emily Heck (Reading, Pa. / Berks Catholic) limited the Quakers' opportunities throughout the match. Senior goalkeeper
Anastasia Godat (Baltimore, Md. / Concordia Preparatory School) made three saves over 60 minutes to secure the shutout victory.
W&J held advantages in shots (17-4), shots on goal (11-3) and penalty corners (14-3) during the strong showing.
The Presidents welcome Allegheny College to Cameron Stadium on Wednesday, Sept. 13. The game will serve as the home opener as well as the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) opener for the Presidents. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Notes: Wachowiak and Giering were named to the Wilson College All-Tournament Team.
