Wachowiak hat trick not enough as Allegheny rallies past W&J in OT, 4-3

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Hailey Wachowiak (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) recorded her fourth collegiate hat trick in a 4-3 overtime loss to visiting Allegheny College Wednesday evening in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) opener for both teams at Cameron Stadium.

The loss drops W&J to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in NCAC play. Allegheny is 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

W&J opened the scoring late in the first quarter when Lily Giering (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) sent a pass in front of the net. Wachowiak was able to find the back of the cage off the pass from Giering to give W&J a 1-0 lead after the first quarter of play.

Less than five minutes into the second quarter, Wachowiak scored again. Her unassisted score gave W&J a 2-0 lead with 10:10 remaining before halftime. The Gators cut the Presidents lead in half when Ramsay Smith scored late in the first half to cut the Presidents' lead to 2-1 at the break.

Wachowiak strengthened the Presidents advantage to 3-1 with a goal midway through the third quarter. Ella Phillips (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) was able to steal the ball in the offensive circle and find Wachowiak just in front of the net. Wachowiak was able to finish off the score to give W&J a 3-1 lead.

The Presidents seemed poised to earn the victory as they entered the fourth quarter with a multi-goal advantage. However, Allegheny took advantage of penalty corner opportunities to net a pair of goals during the final frame of regulation. Maya Francisco scored just 1:37 into the fourth quarter. With around six minutes remaining, Maddy Keanan collected a rebound and off the post and scored to draw things even at 3-3.

Both teams had chances to net the go-ahead score over the final few minutes of regulation. However, both teams came up empty handed and the match headed to overtime.

Emily Robles produced the game-winning goal for the Gators in the final minutes of the first overtime. Robles dribbled up the right side of the field and sent a shot in past the W&J goalkeeper to give the Gators the comeback victory.

Allegheny held advantages in shots (19-12) and shots on goal (14-9). W&J had a slight edge in penalty corners (9-8).

Anastasia Godat (Baltimore, Md. / Concordia Preparatory School) made 10 saves in the loss.

With her three-goal night, Wachowiak moves into a tie for fifth with Erin Barno on the W&J all-time list with 31 goals. Her 71 career points now rank her tied with Laura Peery for eighth most all time at W&J.

W&J hosts Oberlin for another NCAC match on Saturday, Sept. 16 at Cameron Stadium. Start time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
