Team effort helps Field Hockey pick up first NCAC victory

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Four different Presidents scored as a balanced team effort helped the Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team earn a 4-0 victory over visiting Oberlin College Saturday evening under the lights at Cameron Stadium.

Lily Giering (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) and Hailey Wachowiak (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) recorded a goal and an assist to help pace the offensive efforts.

Sara Schriver (Greenville, S.C. / Christ Church Episcopal School) opened the scoring with a first quarter goal. Schriver's first goal of the season came off an assist from Giering in the fifth minute of play.

Wachowiak made it 2-0 with an unassisted goal in the 11th minute. Wachowiak dribbled in, spun and sent a shot past the Oberlin goalie to extend the Presidents lead. The score remained 2-0 as W&J was held off the scoreboard in the second quarter.

Giering collected a rebound and scored in the 40th minute of play. Giering's third quarter goal was assisted by Wachowiak.

Ella Phillips (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) got into the scoring act with a fourth quarter tally. The successful penalty stroke goal by Phillips was the first of the collegiate career for the W&J defensive stalwart.

Anastascia Godat (Baltimore, Md./Concordia Preparatory School) made two saves for her second shutout of the season.

W&J held a 14-3 shot advantage and an 11-4 margin in penalty corner chances.

The Presidents head to Juniata College on Wednesday, Sept. 20. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m. for the non-conference tilt.
