WASHINGTON Pa. – The Washington and Jefferson women's soccer team recorded a 1-0 shutout victory in its home opener against the University of Mount Union Wednesday evening in non-conference play at Alexandre Stadium.
The win improves W&J to 3-1-1 overall this season.
The match was scoreless at halftime despite W&J holding an 11-5 advantage in shots after 45 minutes.
Kayla Daugherty (Prospect, Pa. / Slippery Rock Area),
Sydney Hoover (Lancaster Pa. / Manheim Township),
Katie Brown (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley),
Aimee Toscano (Gilbertsville, Pa. / Boyertown Area), and
Skylar Bibbee (Fairfax, Va. / Chantilly) each had shots on goal before
Dove Corrette-Bennett (New Castle, Pa. / Neshannock) would find the back of the net to put in the winning goal of the game in the 75th minute of play. Corrette-Bennett has now scored back-to-back goals as a freshman. She scored the lone tally in a 1-1 draw versus Oswego State last Saturday.
The Purple Raiders were unable to find the equalizer over the final 15-plus minutes. Mount Union out-shot W&J by a 10-6 margin in the second half.
The Red and Black held a narrow 17-15 shot advantage over the Purple Raiders in the match. W&J recorded all six corner kicks during the match.
Despite Mount Union having a 7-6 edge in shots on goal, W&J was able to post the shutout. Senior goalie
Abby Hipkins (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) made seven saves over the 90 minutes of action to execute the shutout.
W&J will host Penn State Altoona for a 3 p.m. non-conference on Saturday, Sept. 16. Start time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
