Presidents power past Pioneers for NCAC win

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Senior forward Hailey Wachowiak (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) scored twice and junior midfielder Camryn Cresci (Wilmington, Del./ Alexis I. DuPont) tacked on a fourth quarter goal as the Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team topped Transylvania 3-0 in a North Coast Athletic Conference game Sunday afternoon.

The win was the third-straight in conference play for the Presidents, who are 3-1 in NCAC play and 4-4 overall. The Pioneers fall to 0-2 in the conference and 3-6 overall.

Transylvania had a few chances to take an early lead, as they outpaced W&J by a 4-1 margin in shots and gained three penalty corner chances in the first quarter.

Momentum shifted W&J's way in the second quarter. The Presidents kept play in the offensive end and registered eight penalty corner opportunities. W&J broke through in the final minute of the first half. Some nifty passing by junior defender Ella Phillips (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) set up Wachowiak in front of the cage to give W&J a 1-0 lead with 17 seconds remaining before halftime.

W&J wasted little time adding to its lead in the third quarter. Just 3:27 seconds into the second half, Wachowiak scored her second goal of the match and NCAC-leading 10th goal of the season.

Early in the fourth, Cresci scored for the first time this season. Cresci was able to knock one in at the right post.

Wachowiak paced the Presidents' offense with a pair of goals. She has scored in six-straight games. Wachowiak moves into moves into sixth place on the all-time W&J scoring list, as she surpasses Catherine Beaudoin '14.

That was plenty of offensive support for the Presidents defense, who posted its third shutout of the season. Senior Anastasia Godat (Baltimore, Md./ Concordia Preparatory School) made a pair of saves in net.

W&J travels to Wooster for another NCAC tilt on Saturday, Sept. 30. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
