WOOSTER, Ohio – The Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team suffered a tough 1-0 defeat in a shootout Saturday afternoon to the host College of Wooster in a North Coast Athletic Conference match in Ohio.
Neither team was able to record a goal during the 60 minutes of regulation or the two 10-minute overtime periods, thus necessitating a shootout round. All four of W&J's shots came in the second overtime session. Three of which came from Hailey Wachowiak (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny). One of Wachowiak's shots was on goal and saved while another tip attempt just narrowly missed an open part of the cage.
W&J took an early lead in the shootout with Lily Giering (Reading, Pa. / Exeter Township) scoring on the second attempt for the Presidents. This however would be the extent of the Red & Black's scoring during its six attempts in the shootout.
Wooster would even the shootout up at 1-1 when they successfully converted an attempt in the fourth round. Olivia Nengel, who failed on her first attempt of the shootout, converted in the sixth round to put Wooster in front. Cate Barkdoll made the stop on the sixth W&J attempt to give Wooster the hard-fought victory.
Anastasia Godat (Baltimore Md. / Concordia Preparatory School) collected four saves in her 80 minutes in goal for W&J.
The loss drops the Presidents to a 4-5 overall record and 3-2 in NCAC play. The Scots improved to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in NCAC play.
W&J hosts DePauw as part of Homecoming weekend on Saturday, October 7th. The match is slated for a 10 a.m. start at Cameron Stadium.
