WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College men's water polo team concluded play at the annual W&J Invitational with a pair of losses during competition Sunday at the Henry Memorial Natatorium. The Presidents fell by a 20-9 score to Salem University before dropping a 15-9 decision later in the day to Long Island University.
Salem 20, W&J 9
Salem used a strong second half to record the 20-9 win over W&J.
W&J actually raced out to an early 3-1 lead behind a pair of goals from
Lazar Marsenic (Park Ridge, Ill. / Maine South). Salem, however, pulled even with back-to-back scores to even things up after the first quarter.
Both teams scored five goals in a back-and-forth second quarter that put the score at 8-8 at halftime.
Chris Edwards (Bexley, Ohio / St. Charles Prep) and
Aidan Miller (Grove City, Ohio / St. Charles Prep) both accounted for a pair of second quarter goals.
Salem took complete control over the final two quarters. The Tigers outpaced the Presidents by a 12-1 margin over the final 16 minutes.
LIU 15, W&J 9
The Sharks gained an early lead and held control throughout the contest as they coasted to victory. LIU led 6-2 after the first quarter before maintaining its four-goal lead at 9-5 entering halftime. The deficit reached as many as seven goals multiple times in the second half.
Six different Presidents scored in the contest.
Mitchell Rubio (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) paced the Presidents with a three-goal effort.
Aidan Johnson (Nassau, Bahamas/Windsor) finished with a pair of goals.
Up Next: W&J heads to Morgantown, W.Va. for a pair of matches on Saturday, Sept. 9. The Presidents face Mercyhurst and Salem at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park.
