Women's Soccer downs La Roche for second-straight win

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson women's soccer team recorded its second-straight win to open the 2023 season Sunday when they downed La Roche by a 3-1 margin in a non-conference game at the Baierl Athletic Complex in Pittsburgh.

The non-conference win improves W&J to 2-0 overall in the 2023 season. The loss drops the Redhawks to 1-1 thus far. This marks the first time since 2016 that W&J has opened the season with back-to-back victories.

Kendall Obley (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) put the Presidents on the board first with a goal midway through the first half. Kayla Daugherty (Prospect, Pa./Slippery Rock Area) assisted the Obley goal, which came in the 29th minute of play. Just as they did in Friday's win, W&J carried a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The Presidents quickly added to their lead in the early stages of the second half. Skylar Bibbee (Fairfax, Va. / Chantilly) found the back of the net for a second-straight game. Camille Smith (Canton, Ohio/Lake) connected with Bibbee in the 47th minute to set up the score.

W&J added a third goal when Daugherty converted a penalty kick opportunity in the 67th minute. La Roche avoided the shutout with a score in the 85th minute to bring the scoring to a close at 3-1.

The Red and Black held advantages in shots (14-4), shots on goal (8-3) and corner kicks (4-1).

Daughtery paced the offensive efforts with a goal and an assist. Abby Hipkins (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) earned the win in goal. Hipkins posted two saves in 77-plus minutes of action.

W&J travels to New York for the SUNY Fredonia Tournament on Sept. 8-9. The Presidents will face Fredonia on Friday at 3 p.m.
