WASHINGTON Pa. – The Washington and Jefferson College women's tennis team picked up their fourth Presidents' Athletic Conference win, clinching a spot in the conference tournament on the team's senior recognition match.
The incoming trip to the PAC Tournament continues the Presidents seven-year streak of making the conference tournament since changing to the six-team tournament format in 2018. W&J moves to 7-5 on the season and 4-4 in conference play.
W&J secured the first team point of the match, sweeping all doubles bouts, 6-0.
Nidhi Pulicherla (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) and
Claire Loomis (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) took the win at No. 1 doubles, followed by
Jaelyn Kennedy (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) and
Mackenzie Gumto (Renfrew, Pa./Knoch High School) at No. 2 doubles, and
Emma Humphrey (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) with partner
Paisley Cole (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna High School) at No. 3 doubles.
W&J also swept the singles bouts with additional pushback from the Yellow Jackets. Pulicherla and Loomis both swept their opposition in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and No. 2 singles, respectively. Kennedy played the night's most competitive match of the night, entering a third-set after splitting 2-6, 6-3 in the opening sets at No. 3 singles. Kennedy managed to pull off the slim victory in the superbreaker, 10-8.
Cole picked up the Presidents sixth and final swept of the night with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles. Humphrey logged a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles adding to the Presidents wins. Gumto closed out the bout with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles, ensuring W&J's sweep of Waynesburg.
W&J now awaits its opponent for the opening round of PAC Tournament play. That match is scheduled for Tuesday (Oct. 15).
