Volleyball Wins Electrifying Fourth Set to Overthrow Thiel, 3-1

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College Volleyball team logged their second Presidents' Athletic Conference victory of the season against the Thiel Tomcats, 3-1.

With the win, the Presidents move to 11-9 on the season overall and 2-1 in PAC play.

During the first set of action, the Presidents and Tomcats traded lead changes in the early going. A Tomcat kill sparked an eight-point swing to put Thiel up 23-17. The Presidents attempted a late response, logging for-straight points from two attack errors by Thiel and two kills from Faith Fetsko (Venetia, Pa./South Park), but to no avail, dropping the first set 25-22.

W&J flipped the switch on Thiel in the second set, jumping out to an early 8-2 lead. Rian Benz (Strongsville, Ohio/Holy Name) and the Presidents defense helped grow the lead to 19-12. Freshman Alexandra Ash (Richmond, Ohio/Edison) sealed the first set victory of the bout with a kill off an assist from Brielle Moorhouse (East Liberty, Ohio/Benjamin Logan), 25-18.

In the third set, the Tomcats worked their way to an early 11-7 lead with the Presidents struggling to find their rhythm. W&J soon mounted multiple point swings to creep back into the matchup, including a five-point swing led by senior right side Jaden Blough (Meyersdale, Pa./Meyersdale) to give the Presidents a 21-17 lead. Following a quick response from Thiel knotting the score at 22, Fetsko came through in the clutch again, logging the final three kills of the set to win W&J their second set victory of the day, 25-23.

The fourth set was dominated in the early going by W&J, holding leads of 9-4 and 19-13. Thiel snuck back into the matchup just as the Presidents were scored their 24th point, to push past the normal 25-point mark. Down 27-26, the Presidents recorded the next three-straight points to win the bout, 29-27.

Fetsko led the Presidents in kills with 21 and also contributed 20 digs. Blough tacked on 10 kills in the win followed by Ash with seven. Adrianna Sacramento (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) headed the assist department, dishing out 23 while Moorhouse added 19.

Abby Oldham (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) logged a career-high eight total blocks at the middle blocker position followed by Blough with six. Piper McFarland (West Mifflin, Pa./Cornerstone Preparatory Academy) headed the Presidents back row with 25 digs on the outing.

W&J hits the road to face Chatham in the bright lights of Pittsburgh this Wednesday (Oct. 16). The match is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
