WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College volleyball team drops to even in Presidents' Athletic Conference play following a 3-1 loss to Chatham.
The loss shifts the Presidents to 11-10 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
The Presidents opened the bout with a 25-21 victory in the first set of play. The Presidents created an early lead in the opening set which was not matched by the Cougars. Grouping of kills by
Faith Fetsko (Venetia, Pa./South Park) and
Jaden Blough (Meyersdale, Pa./Meyersdale) helped W&J muster multiple point swings to maintain the sizable lead.
The second set seemed to take a similar approach as W&J jumped out to an early 10-5 lead. The Cougars mustered a six-point swing to earn their first lead of the match that would not be surrendered for their first set victory of the match, 25-20.
The Cougars picked up momentum in the third set, winning the first eight points of the third set with no response from the Presidents. The large lead was too much for W&J as they dropped the third set, 25-14.
With Chatham clicking on offense, W&J was left in the dirt in the fourth set as the Cougars built another large lead, 15-7 in the midst of the set. Kills by Fetsko and Blough snapped the run in attempt at a comeback, 15-10. Fighting back into the matchup, Blough connected on two-straight kills to knot the score at 24 off assists from
Adrianna Sacramento (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills).
Rian Benz (Strongsville, Ohio/Holy Name) tied the score again at 25, but to no avail as the Presidents would drop the fourth and final set of the night, 28-26.
Blough led the team in kills with 13 followed by Fetsko with 10. Sacramento headed the setting efforts with 24 assists coupled with 16 assists set up by
Brielle Moorhouse (East Liberty, Ohio/Benjamin Logan).
Defensively, Fetsko led the team with 24 digs followed by
Piper McFarland (West Mifflin, Pa./Cornerstone Preparatory Academy) with 22. Freshman
Alexandra Ash (Richmond, Ohio/Edison) added five total blocks with nine kills on the night.
W&J returns to their home court this Saturday (Oct. 19), in a midday matchup with Allegheny. Opening serve is set for 3:00 p.m.
