WAYNESBURG, Pa. – Last minute scores by sophomore Jimmy Gogol (Westminster, Md./Westminster) and junior Ethan Bowser (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) elevates the Washington & Jefferson men's soccer team to a 4-2 win over Waynesburg on the road.
The win lifts the Presidents to an overall record of 4-6-1 with a 1-1-1 mark in conference. The loss drops Waynesburg to 6-3-1 so far on the season with a 2-1-1 mark in PAC competition.
Waynesburg wasted no time finding the scoring column as they netted their first goal just 1:55 into the game.
W&J's first shot and goal of the game was registered shortly after at 6:25 unassisted by Freshman Alonte Harris (Arlington, Va./Washington Lee) for the first collegiate goal of his career. After a cross was incomplete and bounced back out by the Yellow Jacket Defense, Harris took a shot from beyond the box that trickled past the goalie into the bottom left corner of the net.
Despite the Presidents letting loose seven shots and the Yellow Jackets ripping off four of their own with W&J leading in shots on goal (3-1) in the first 45 minutes of play, both teams headed into the second half knotted, 1-1.
Both teams seemingly mimicked the first half, scoring early on. The Yellow Jackets netted their next goal seven minutes into the half, creating a 2-1 leg up. W&J's Justin Parker Wyatt (Coatesville, Pa./Unionville) responded in the 60th minute of play with an unassisted goal to tie things up for the Red & Black, 1-1.
The tie held throughout the rest of the second half until the final minutes of play were dwindling down. Gogol netted the leading goal off a pass from Wyatt at the 82:57 mark. With both teams desperately making attempts to score in the final minutes of play, Bowser was able to break past his defender to hurl a shot past the Waynesburg goalie to seal the deal for the Presidents, 4-2.
W&J finished with a 17-8 advantage in shots and a 9-2 edge in shots on goal over Waynesburg.
Graeme Ewart (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) charted all 90 minutes of play for the Presidents, picking up his second win of the season.
The Presidents return home this week to take on the Allegheny Gators on Wednesday (Oct. 9). The matchup has a scheduled start time of 5:30 p.m.
