WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College men's soccer team picked up their second conference loss of the season this evening against the Allegheny Gators, 2-1.
W&J shifts to 4-7-1 on the season overall and 1-2-1 in Presidents' Athletic Conference play.
An unblemished first half for both sides took place, ending the first 45 in a nil-nil showing. W&J held a 3-1 advantage in corners and a 3-2 advantage in shots, but ultimately couldn't find the back of the net.
The Gators opened the second half with two quick scores just two minutes apart. The first was tacked on in the 57
th minute of play on an assisted effort. The game-winning goal by the Gators was added through a penalty kick drawn from the Presidents'
Derek Errett (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry).
Sophomore
Logen Mackey (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) dialed up a late response to the Allegheny goals by adding one of his own in the 65
th minute. Mackey's goal was set up by freshman
Chris Davis (Toms Brook, Va./Strasburg), adding his first assist of his collegiate career. The Presidents logged two additional corner opportunities and three shots before the final horn sounded in a 2-1 loss to Allegheny.
Mackey tallied his fourth goal of this season, now leading the team in goals.
Antonio Romero (Bowie, Md./Bowie) and
Justin Parker Wyatt (Coatesville, Pa. / Unionville) both led the team with two total shots and one shot on goal.
Allegheny outshot W&J 10-7 (5-3 on goal) and logged one more opportunity through corners.
Graeme Ewart (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) logged all 90 minutes in goal with three saves.
The Presidents return to their home pitch on Saturday (Oct. 12), to face the Chatham Cougars. The match is set for a 3:00 p.m. start.
