Men’s Water Polo Collects Day Two Triumph at MPSF Championships

BERKELEY, Calif. - The Washington & Jefferson College men's water polo split in day two of the 2024 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Championships, dropping the first game to Augustana (16-8) before coming back to win game two, 14-8, against Wheaton (Mass.) Saturday evening.

Augustana was able to score six in the first quarter followed by seven in the second while limiting W&J to just two in each quarter to create a 13-4 lead heading into the half.

Brody Souder (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) scored first for the Presidents followed by Aidan Miller (Grove City, Ohio/St. Charles Prep) who scored once more in the second quarter after freshman Hector Santaella (Key Biscayne, Fla./Belen Jesuit Prep).

In the final half, both teams traded scoreless quarters. Augustana went on a 6-0 run in the third before W&J flipped the script. The Presidents were only able to tally four goals off of marks from Kailer Spicer (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing), Timothy Deutsch (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton) and two from Souder to close out the game with a final score of 16-8.

Souder led the offensive in game one with three goals and logged the only assist for the Presidents.

W&J 18, Wheaton (Mass.) 8

Both teams started strong as they entered the second quarter tied 4-4 after the first eight minutes of play.

Wheaton jumped out first scoring 27 seconds in. Aidan Johnson (Nassau, Bahamas / Windsor) tallied the first point for the Presidents followed by Santaella who scored in the same minute. Wheaton then scored three straight before Miller tallied the final two scores for the Red & Black in the first quarter.

Santaella scored twice in the second quarter for W&J with one being a penalty goal at the 1:47 mark before Wheaton tallied their only mark of the eight minutes with 18 seconds left in the half.

Parker, Spicer and Adam Brock (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Ranch) came out scoring for the Presidents after the half extending their lead to 9-5. Wheaton closed the gap to 9-7 heading into the final eight minutes of play.

The Presidents utilized a 5-1 surge in the final quarter to put away the game and claim the 14-8 victory over the Lyons to cap day two of the MPSF Championships.

Santaella and Miller led the team with four goals each. Spicer racked up a team and game high four assists in the contest.

Up Next: W&J faces Austin College at the MPSF Championships on Sunday (Nov. 24). The match is set to get proceed at 9:30 a.m. PST.
