Men's Lacrosse wins season opener


PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College men's lacrosse team rolled to a 29-1 victory over La Roche University Tuesday afternoon in the season opener for both schools. 

W&J led 5-0 after the first quarter before adding 11 more scores in the second quarter to build a 16-0 advantage at halftime. The lead eventually reached 23-0 in the third before La Roche broke up the shutout. The Presidents scored all six goals in the fourth quarter to finish off the victory. 

Twenty of the 29 W&J goals were assisted in the win over the Redhawks. Nine different Presidents scored in the win. W&J held lopsided advantages in shots (81-8), ground balls (73-20) and face-off wins (32-1). 

Carter Watts (Gilbertsville, Pa. / Boyertown) recorded career highs in both goals and points in the victory. Watts finished with nine goals and five assists to lead the offense. 

Paul Shook (Camp Hill, Pa./Trinity) finished with seven points (4g, 3a) while Zach Mey (Bridgeville, Pa. / South Fayette) had five goals and an assist and Braden Petrarco (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) one goal and four assists. 

Ronin Keane (Medford, Mass./Arlington Catholic) finished with a career-high 21 ground balls. Braden Petrarco added 14 ground balls and three caused turnovers while Nathan Petrarco (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) added 10 ground balls and two caused turnovers. 

Sophomore goalkeeper Colton Powers (Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) started and picked up the victory in goal. 

W&J travels to Muskingum University for a non-conference tilt on Saturday, Feb. 24. Start time is scheduled for 11 a.m.
