BEXLEY, Ohio – The Washington & Jefferson College women's lacrosse team was outpaced by a 23-17 margin in a high-scoring affair by host Capital University in non-conference play at Bernlohr Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Offense ruled the day in a matchup of a pair of NCAA Tournament qualifiers from a season ago. The Comets, who advanced to the NCAA Tournament Second Round last spring, rolled up 23 goals behind a stellar offensive showing by Grace Osborn.
Osborn, Capital's all-time leading goal scorer, tallied 13 goals and added five assists during the Comets' victory Saturday.
The teams battled through a back and forth first quarter. Capital scored four of the first five goals to take the early advantage. The Presidents quickly responded with four-straight goals in less than two minutes to surge into the lead.
Ella Holland (Healdsburg, Calif. / Cardinal Newman) scored a pair of first quarter goals to lead the Presidents early on. A late goal with two seconds to play in the quarter allowed Capital to even the score at 5-5.
Caleigh Bogats (Oakdale, Pa./Chartiers Valley) scored a pair of goals in the early stages of the second quarter to knot the score up at 7-7. Capital responded with seven of the next eight goals to lead 14-8 with 2:11 left before halftime.
Aisa Uhler (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) scored a player-down goal with just four seconds left in the half to trim the deficit to five goals.
W&J opened the third quarter with three-straight scores. Two goals by
Anna Kloehn () and an unassisted goal by
Sofia Jenkins (Hughesville, Md./The Calverton School) brought the Presidents within a pair (14-12) at the 8:12 mark.
Capital would methodically pull away over the course of the remainder of the game. The Comets led 19-15 at the end of the third quarter. Capital scored four of the six fourth quarter goals.
Uhler paced the Presidents with five goals in the loss. Bogats finished with four goals and three assists for a team-high seven points. Bogats added team highs in draw controls (6) and ground balls (4) in the setback.
Kloehn, Holland and Emily Head (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) each added two goals apiece. Jenkins finished with five draw controls and four points (1g, 3a).
Kaitlyn Brown (Charlotte Hall, Md./La Plata) made 11 saves in goal for the Presidents.
