Early offensive onslaught powers Presidents in lopsided road win

MARIETTA, Ohio -- Nine different players scored as the Washington & Jefferson College women's lacrosse team rolled to a 22-12 road win over Marietta College in non-conference action Wednesday evening at Marietta Field.

The Presidents scored the first seven goals of the match to build a 9-1 lead after the opening quarter. Senior attack Aisa Uhler (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) scored three times in the opening quarter. Freshman midfielder Ella Holland (Healdsburg, Calif./Cardinal Newman) added a pair of first quarter scores to help the Presidents build a sizable lead from the outset.

Marietta scored four of the first five goals in the second quarter. The Pioneers eventually trimmed the deficit to 11-7 with a goal at the 5:03 mark of the frame. However, the Presidents responded with the final three goals to take a 14-7 lead into halftime. Sophomore attack Anna Kloehn (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) stopped the Marietta momentum with a goal off an assist from Sofia Jenkins (Hughesville, Md./The Calverton School) with 4:10 to play in the half.

After the Pioneers scored to open the third quarter, sophomore midfielder Caleigh Bogats (Oakdale, Pa./Chartiers Valley) put in back-to-back goals in front of a Holland score that made it 17-8. Later in the third, Kloehn found the back of the net for a third time following an assist from Jenkins.

The Red and Black pushed the lead into double digits with four-straight goals in the fourth. Senior defender Paige Howe (Bowie, Md. / St. John's) and junior Haley Lawyer (Glenside, Pa. / Archbishop Wood) accounted for three goals during the run.

Uhler finished with six points (4 goals, 2 assists), Jenkins added two goals and four assists for a six-point effort. Senior attack Emily Heck (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) also finished with six points (2 goals, 4 assists).

Holland filled the stat sheet with four goals along with team highs in ground balls (6) and caused turnovers (3). Bogats finished with three goals and nine draw controls.

Junior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Brown (Charlotte Hall, Md./La Plata) recorded 14 saves and picked up seven ground balls.

W&J opens Presidents' Athletic Conference play with a road trip to Meadville, Pa. on Saturday, March 30. The Presidents will face Allegheny College in a rematch of the 2023 PAC title game. Start time is scheduled for 12 p.m.
