WASHINGTON, Pa. –
Sofia Jenkins (Hughesville, Md./The Calverton School) and
Anna Kloehn (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) posted career highs as the Washington & Jefferson College women's lacrosse team used a big second half to pull away from visiting Chatham University in a 20-13 victory Wednesday evening at Alexandre Stadium.
The win is the fifth-straight for the Presidents. W&J is 4-0 in Presidents' Athletic Conference play and 5-6 overall. The loss drops Chatham to 2-1 in the conference and 5-5 overall.
Jenkins registered a career-high 10 points with four goals and six assists during the victory. Jenkins added four draw controls. Jenkins has 114 career assists, which has equaled Caroline Kallos '18 for the most in program history.
Kloehn netted a career-high six goals during W&J's most recent victory. The sophomore has scored at least three goals in five-straight games. Kloehn tallied three goals in the first five-plus minutes of the fourth when W&J solidified its lead.
The teams were tied at 3-3 at the midway point of the first quarter. W&J took a 6-4 lead after the opening 15 minutes due to a 3-1 spurt over the final 6:35 of the opening frame.
Emily Heck (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic), Kloehn and Jenkins scored consecutively to give the Presidents the lead.
Kloehn,
Aisa Uhler (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) and Heck helped W&J stretch its lead to 9-5 with consecutive goals in the second. However, Chatham scored the final three goals of the second quarter, holding the Presidents scoreless for more than seven minutes. An unassisted score by Erin Goodwin brought the Cougars back to within one (9-8) at halftime.
The Cougars scored in the opening minute of the third quarter to even the score. The Presidents countered with five of the next six goals. Jenkins scored back-to-back goals to open the run. Jenkins later added an assist on a Kloehn goal during the extended spurt.
W&J held a 14-11 lead entering the final 15 minutes. The Red and Black put the game away with four-straight scores to open the fourth. Kloehn scored the first two goals of the fourth unassisted. Jenkins then set up two more scores, one to
Caleigh Bogats (Oakdale, Pa./Chartiers Valley) and Kloehn. The Kloehn goal with 9:26 left had the W&J lead at 18-11.
The two teams traded the final two scores. Heck and Jenkins both scored off assists from the other for W&J's final two goals of the night.
Aside from the contributions from Jenkins and Kloehn, the Presidents got five points from Heck and four points from Uhler.
Bogats held things down in the midfield with a game-high nine draw controls.
Ella Phillips (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) was active on the defensive end. The junior finished with a season-high six caused turnovers and matched her season-high with five ground balls.
Mya Bolinda (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) and
Sammy Hartz (Ijamsville, Md./Oakdale) added three ground balls apiece.
Kaitlyn Brown (Charlotte Hall, Md./La Plata) made eight saves to earn the victory in goal.
W&J held advantages in shots (39-28), shots on goal (31-21), ground balls (25-20) and draw controls (21-16).
The Presidents head to Franciscan University of Steubenville on Saturday, April 13. First draw is scheduled for 1 p.m.
