STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – The Washington & Jefferson College's men's tennis program suffered an 8-1 defeat to the Franciscan University Barons Tuesday afternoon in a Presidents' Athletic Conference match at the Belleview Tennis Courts.
In doubles play, the Presidents battled through three hard-fought competitive matches, yet Franciscan won with respective scores of 8-4, 8-6, and 8-7 (7-5).
Sophomores
Nate Clarke (New Kensington, Pa. / Valley) and
Mitch Kenney (North Huntingdon, Pa. / Norwin) had an impressive debut as doubles partners at the three spot, fallling just short in a tiebreaker.
Continuing his hot streak at third singles,
Abhinav Yarramaneni (Mountainview, Calif. / Los Altos) came through for the Red & Black by putting up the only point for the Presidents. He won by a 6-1, 6-4 score over Cy Yvars.
Kenney made his debut in the Presidents' starting singles lineup in the six-slot competing against David Bourdelais. After securing the first set 6-4, Kenney dropped the second set by a score of 6-1. Kenney battled in the third-set tiebreaker but fell by a 10-8 score.
The Presidents go into their last home match of the season sixth in the PAC standings with a 3-4 conference record and 6-9 overall record. W&J will play their final regular season match as they host PAC rival Westminster College at the Janet Swanson Tennis Center Thursday, April 18 at 4 p.m.
